The second series of LEAD2 workshops held in Gliwice, 24-26 October 2019

From 24 to 26 September 2018, Silesian University of Technology (SUT) hosted the second series of LEAD2 workshops. The conference was attended by 35 European and Chinese academic leaders and higher education experts from partner and non-partner institutions.   

On the first day of the conference, the 24th of September, Doctor Marcin Gorski, Director of Project management center, SUT, welcomed all participants to the workshop. He presented the changes at the Silesian University of Technology related to the introduction of the Constitution for Science, Priority Research Areas, research disciplines selected at the University and activities aimed at obtaining the status of a research university. Professor ZHU Baojiang, Vice President at NAEA, greeted all participants on behalf of the Chinese institutions. He stated that the LEAD2 project greatly helped Chinese and European Higher Education institutions in enhancing their knowledge of university governance and in strengthening mutual understanding between institutions. Professor Jan Cornelis, a Former Vice-Rector of Vrije University Brussel (VUB), also gave an opening remark on behalf of VUB, project organizer. 

During the three days of the conference, academic leaders had opportunities to exchange ideas on cross-cases of university governance. In particular, five different cases on university governance structures were firstly presented by participants from SUT, METU, Tongji University, Chinese University of Geosciences, Guangxi Normal University, and Yunnan University. Following these keynote speeches, discussion sessions on cross-case and analyses were implemented. In this light, SWOT analyses, global structures of each case, strong and weak points, commonalities and differences, recommendations were discussed and optimized.

Furthermore, LEAD2 workshops on Comparative Research of University Governance were moderated by Prof. LIU Yarong, NAEA, and Prof. ZHU Chang, VUB. In this line, research meeting by themes, specific research plan, instruments  & measurements, timeline, and output were fruitfully discussed within 4 sub research teams.
