The Vrije Universiteit Brussel is the offshoot of the French-speaking Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) that was founded in 1834. VUB has more than 14, 000 students, among which 23% are international students. VUB offers 27 Bachelor programmes, 90 Master and Advanced Master (32 are taught in English) programmes, and over 35 Ph.D. disciplines. VUB has over 3000 staff at the university and 3,350 staff at the university hospital, UZ Brussel. Innovation and internationalization are the core strategies of the university. Companies and institutions expect the new generation of graduates to think and work innovatively and at international level. Many VUB researchers are ranked as world-class. VUB has awarded honorary doctorates to Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi, Václav Havel, and Sonia Gandhi, among others. VUB is especially strong in strategic planning, educational innovations, academic governance, eg. working with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of academic staff and academic leadership. On university governance and academic leadership, VUB has also been improving and optimizing the governance structure in collaboration with other European universities. On academic leadership, VUB has been developing policy documents and guidelines for academic leadership at faculty and university central management levels.

        The EU-China Higher Education Research Center (ECHE) is a research group of VUB. ECHE is one of the cooperation platforms at VUB collaborating with Chinese HEIs. It aims to facilitate research cooperation and collaboration in the field of higher education in the EU and China.

        VUB manages and coordinates a wide range of North, South, Own Initiative, and Institutional Cooperation projects. It has very actively participated in Erasmus Mundus and Erasmus + programme and has over 30 Erasmus Mundus partners. VUB is the coordinator of several Erasmus Mundus projects, targeting for student and staff exchange between European and Chinese universities and other Asian HEIs. VUB has coordinated several EMA2, EMA3/EMECW projects with Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. The ECHE of VUB was the coordinator of the EU-China DOC project on EU-China cooperation on doctoral education. VUB has been the partner in more than 10 other EM projects: LISUM, Lotus I, II, III…These projects have strengthened our cooperation ties with China and other Asian countries.

        VUB is the coordinator of the LEAD1 and LEAD2 project. It coordinates all the project activities of LEAD2 and is responsible for the project management and coordination of the project implementation.
